it is really not that hard, and I know of quite a few people that have done it themselves. Couple of simple rules: 1. Make sure you set the litronic unit down stable - it should not wobble. Don't lay it down, the opening should be on top. 2. Make sure you ventilate the unit - open all holes so air can flow through. 3. Have a steady hand. If not, have someone else do it. 4. Use aluminum foil to protect the opening. It doesn't prevent the opening from melting, but it gives you the extra few seconds that you don't have otherwise. 5. Work from the centerline to both sides. Initially you can only touch the amber lens, eventually you will touch the clear plastic. This will cause black 'burns' on the mirror surface you want to avoid. Don't go in too deep, you only want to burn the amber. 6. Pause frequently If you don't - the melting plastic will fog up the mirror surface. The plastic residue is hard to clean up (because you can hardly reach it). 7. Once the plastic pieces begin to seperate, start pulling them towards the hole using needle-nose pliers. You'll be surprised how a 'large' piece will curl and easily pull through the opening if you give it a strong pull. 8. All said, it takes about 10 to 15 minutes to pull the amber out of the light unit, for each unit. So count on an hour or so all together. 9. Check some of the other postings and try to visualize the litronic unit assembly. This is very useful. The amber lens is a square shape. The mirror shape around it angles out at a 45 degree angle. 10. Get the Philips Silvervision bulbs. You cannot put back in the 'white' bulbs - you must have orange bulbs to be legal. Don't get the 'painted' bulbs - they don't work - they are not bright enough. The Philips bulbs are about as bright as orange bulbs, but they appear silver. (And the brightness is very similar to the white bulb with the orange lens, as the unit came). Most people get the Philips Silvervisions from Europe, which means that the barbs on the bulb don't fit. Scrape one barb off (even a screwdriver will do the trick), you'll be fine.
